Our lab mix is almost 7 years old and is starting to take a little longer to get up from a laying position. I think her hips are getting a little creaky, though she doesn’t seem to be in any pain, just a little slower. Any suggestions about what we can do to slow the arthritis – certain foods, OTC medications? She has been taking a joint vitamin for just a couple days that I bought at the pet store, but I wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions.

I have a collie-sheltie who will be seventeen in July this year. I have given him MSM glucosamine condrontin ,hip action, zeel probiotics, multi-vits, Krumble, etc. etc.daily and an occasional Remadyl It’s becoming more and more difficult for him to just get up. He doesn’t seem to be in pain but it breaks my heart to watch him struggle like this. He is in good health otherwise.

a diet containing glucosamine is a good option. this helps to support joints and aid movement. a natural ingredient added to diets is green limp mussels! and yes they are as disgusting as they sound but have good natural ingredients to aid movements in the joint.
if the animal is in discomfort the animal may need some prescribed medication such as carprofen (rimadyl) or meloxicam (metacam). these are nsaids (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) with qualities such an analgesic (pain relief) and an anti – inflammatory. used to help support joints, prevent discomfort and aid movement, there are side effects to the drug such as the possibility of liver damage but this is closely monitored by the vet with the use of blood tests.
animals do very well on this. other supplements are available from the vet if nsaids are not required.

Plenty. First, take her to her vet for x-rays so the vet can determine how bad it is. The vet can then tell you if your dog can be kept pain-free with glucosamine chondroitin with MSM (which isn’t prescription) and the correct dosage. If the arthritis is too bad for that, the vet will prescribe meds to keep your lab pain-free. Please don’t wait – there’s lots of help for your dog.
