How To Treat Dog Arthritis By Exercise

The best way to treat your dog with arthritis in the long run will be providing a healthy and suitable amount of exercise. Swimming is an excellent exercise for dogs with arthritis, as it is non-weight-bearing, so your dog can exercise vigorously without damaging his joints.

However, do bear in mind that exercise for dog with arthritis should avoid putting on too much strain on dog joints. This is because its cartilage in joints is damaged and lost which contribute to the outcome of bone-on-bone grinding.

You can only provide low impact of exercise for your dog as harsh exercise will increase the burden to the joints which will increase the pain. Normal leash walking will be the best exercise for your dog. This will help to strengthen the muscle and stabilize the damaged joints.

You will need to setup a slower exercise program for your dog. Start for short period of exercise. These give your dog time to get in shape. Short walks intercepting with rest periods will be the best. However, give full observation to your dog. If dogs suffered from pain after the exercise, reduce the time of exercise. Muscle can be strengthening over time. You may increase the length of walking your dog over time.

Arthritis tends to occur to overweight dog. In this case, please do not increase the exercise extensively in order to help in reducing weight for your dog. Excessive exercise will only increase the stress in the joints and worsen your dog arthritis before successful weight loss. You must pay more attention if your dog is having torn ligament before.

Do not provide any chances for your dog to jump or leap especially large breed dogs. This is because large breed dogs will gain great impact from jumping or leaping to the injured or damaged joints. Reduce the probability to hurt the injured joints if possible. If your dogs love doing so, keep him on leash or crate him.

You must beware the exercise time. Avoid letting your dog exercise during hot day. In this case, early morning or late evening will be the best. Please make sure your dog drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise. Keep your dog from hot sidewalks and pavements as this will injured its paws which will worsen its dog arthritis.
