She is a 4 year old Sheltie and the past couple of days she has been favoring her left front leg. I have tried to keep her calm just in case she sprained it or something, but she loves to run and play. Can dogs get arthritis at this age? It seems to bother her more when she has been laying down for a while and then gets up. Once she starts walking she doesn’t seem to limp as bad. I am taking her to the vet in a couple of days if she is not any better. What do you guys think?

A few years ago my mother adopted a three-legged shepherd/collie and we named her Maddie. Maddie has full acess to my moms yard 24 hours a day (my mom has 2 acres for her to run). However, about a year ago Maddie started to get a little lazy about running around by herself and my mom, unfortunately neglected to walk her on a leash so Maddie became a little overweight. More recently, Maddie seemed depressed, she wouldnt eat and it became apparent that it was difficult for her to get up from a lying down position. She was brought to the vet, put on a strict diet and glucosamine. She cant walk for long distances but we are making a point to walk her everyday. She loves swimming but there arent many places near by that we can bring her to swim. She seems a little better but is still hesitant to walk up or down stairs, she still sometimes has trouble getting up and she still runs very slowly. Any suggestions? The vet says if she doesnt improve in another 2 weeks or so to bring her back. Does anyone have any experience with amputee dogs that have arthritis?
