what is the average age for a dog to begin to start showing signs of arthritis, and what are some signs?

i have a lab, hes 12 and started showing signs at about 9. when they walk, its kind of stiff looking, when they go to lie down, its really slow and there legs shake, and they kind of flop. if you touch with pressure (not too much) over his/her body, and they get defesive because of pain, on areas like joints, those are all signs.

Arthritis is more commonly seen in large breeds, but small breeds are not immune to it. Arthritis can appear at any age. If found in a young animal (under 5 years old), it’s most often due to a prior injury in the area. Most commonly affected are the hips and spine. Symptoms range from swelling of the joints, tenderness, slow unsure movements, and occasionally the owner will see personality changes, i.e. aggression in an otherwise docile dog. A healthy diet to maintain proper weight, a daily regime of moderate exercise, and in some cases, glucosamine supplements can help increase the quality of life. With proper nutrition and care, the animal does not need to suffer with this debilitating disease, and they can often live a long and happy life.

Our dog Dio is three and he has injury induced arthritis (he hurt his right front elbow when he was only 9 months old).
When his elbow is bothering him, he throws his right leg out when he walks or he tries not to bear any weight on the leg at all. (He hobbles)
The elbow swells up and when I touch it is warm to the touch.
He also lays around a lot and just doesn’t look like he’s feeling too good.

If the dog is a purebred they could show signs of arth very early. It’s a good idea to go to Wholefoods and buy human grade msm-chondroitin-glucosamine -give the doggie between a tenth & a 1/4 of the human dosage (depending on size You can check with a holistic vet for dosage or on internet). Start now and you will help your dog avoid severe arthritic symptoms. Works on cats, too. Good luck.
To everyone else-If your dog already has arthrits, msm-chondroitin-glucosamine will create almost miraculous relief for the doggie, and give them relief that you can see.

It depends on the breed of dog. My sister has a Boston Terrier who’s five and has arthritis in his knees. He runs three-legged when its bothering him.

depends on the breed…i had a golden retriever and he developed arthritis when he was like 11 maybe? he lived to be 13…he was the best dog ever…..he had a stroke
